The International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) refers to Occupational Hygiene as the discipline of anticipating, recognising, evaluating and controlling health hazards in the working environment with the objective of protecting worker health and well-being and safeguarding the community at large.
Workplace and community hazards can generally be divided into physical, chemical, biological or environmental. Common physical hazards may include noise, temperature extremes, illumination extremes, radiation and ergonomics. Chemical hazards are often classified as Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances, while biological hazards may result from exposure to pests and disease or airborne pathogens. Environmental hazards relate to indoor air quality and potential exposure to other identified hazards.
Occupational Hygienists determine the potential for hazard, exposures or risk in workplaces and develop safe systems, procedures or methods to be applied in the workplace or to the environment.
Refer to the IOHA website at http://www.ioha.net/ for further reading.
