What are chlorofluorocarbons?

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were widely used from the 1940s as aerosol propellants, refrigerants and solvents. CFCs are non toxic to humans and non flammable.

Since the 1970s it has become widely accepted that CFCs continue to damage the ozone layer once they are released into the atmosphere.

In 1989 the Australian Government passed the Ozone Protection Act to implement the agreements made under the Montreal Protocol (1987) and subsequent revisions (London 1990 and Copenhagen 1992). The main aim of the Montreal Protocol is to phase out the use of CFCs and Halons.

CFC containing items are generally identified by the presence of a badge or serial number plate that details the chiller fluid type; with R12 and R22 being the two main types of CFC containing chiller fluids used. Once an item has been identified as containing CFCs the chiller fluid must be disposed of by an appropriate contractor, who will bleed the gas under controlled conditions. CFCs are a prescribed waste and must be handled and disposed of by a contractor who holds the relevant licenses to do so.
