Dangerous Goods & Hazardous Substances

Dangerous goods are substances that are explosive, flammable, toxic, combustible, oxidizing, toxic, radioactive and corrosive.

Dangerous Goods Classes

Dangerous goods can cause injury, death, property and environment damage. Some frequently used dangerous goods include petrol, LPG, paints, pesticides, welding gas and acids.

Hazardous substances are chemicals that have the potential to cause ill-health. This can be due to the presence of:

    -   Toxins
    -   Oxidisers
    -   Irritants
    -   Radioactivity
    -   Sensitizing agents
    -   Carcinogens
    -   Corrosives, or other highly reactive substances in the chemicals or mixtures used

Services offered by ESP to ameliorate dangerous goods and hazardous substances issues:

  • Ensure there is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for all chemicals found and used on site.
  • Conduct dangerous goods and hazardous substances risk assessments using AS 1940, 3833, 1596 and OH&S audits.
  • Create chemical registers and manifests.
  • Advise and assist in compliance audits.
  • Conduct exposure monitoring.
  • Advise and assist in storage, handling, labelling and placards for dangerous goods and hazardous substances.
  • Create client specific training programs.

There are many standards referenced when dealing with dangerous goods and hazardous substances. Common examples include:

AS 1940-2004: The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids

AS/NZS 3833-2007: The storage and handling of mixed classes of dangerous goods, in packages and intermediate bulk containers.

AS/NZS 1596-2008: The storage and handling of LP gas.
